Bags, Bags, Bags.we are now incredibly accustomed to bagging everything. The best solution is to reduce your use of bags. If you must use a bag to shop try to use a re-usable organic cotton or hemp bag. These crops are grown in a sustainable way and when the bag rips (and it eventually will) you know it won't be here for 100 years or more.

Paper bags are a preferred alternative to plastic bags because they can be recycled or composted (if they are free of chlorine and are not lined with a petroleum wax). In addition some paper bags are made with some recycled paper. Unfortunately the making of paper bags does consume a great deal of energy.

Compostable bags are often marketed as made from corn or potatoes. In fact all compostable bags (the ones that look a little like plastic) are still mostly made from petroleum derivatives. They are not petroleum free. A number of these bags use a waste product of the petroleum industry turning the molecules into something that is still 'natural'. This means that it is recognized by mother nature as a safe food source. This waste product would otherwise be dumped and go un-used. It is a 'greener' product then plastic bags. However it is not petroleum free.so don't be fooled by 'made from corn/potato' marketing. It really means made with some corn/potatoes. Choose bags marked with ASTM6400 and the word compostable.

AVOID bags marked as 'biodegradable'. There is a very good reason why they are using the word biodegradable instead of compostable. These are normal plastic bags with an additive added. They are not recommended by composting organisations as safe for contact with the natural world.

A clear slightly opaque bag. This bag is great to package fruit and veggies. Though smaller this is a win-win alternative to selling the Mini-Kitchen Catcher.  Your operational waste becomes a useful resource for your customers to collect their kitchen waste and throw it in their compost!
